Our World of Darkness

The World of Darkness, the domains of Kindred is divided by Sects, Clans, ideologies, ancient alliances and feuds. Albeit none of them is really united, the two largest and most powerful of these global players is the Camarilla, also called the Ivory Tower, and the Sabbath, often referred to as the Sword of Caine.

The Camarilla is troubled by internal political conflicts, millennia-long revenges and jealousness, medieval vendettas and tainted blood. Yet, it is resourceful, controls the most developed and culturally, industrially and politically powerful parts of the world and has a somewhat flexible, feudal but slowly changing system. During the 20th century the Camarilla managed to reform itself and take the initiative on the Sabbath. The events like the Ukranian War show the Camarilla can adapt and use unconventional tactics too.  However, the Camarilla has some serious issues to solve – infernalism amongst the leaders, restarting economical competition between the Ventrue and Brujah, the Tremere-Ventrue and Ventrue-Toreador conflicts, the strange habits of some areas (such as Russia, South Africa, Indonesia, Turkey or Korea), the rumours like the ancient Nosferatu monsters hunting their Clan, the instability of the Malkavian Madness Network, the attacks against the Nosferatu SchreckNet and the more and more politically active Toreador Guilds.

The Justicars of the Camarilla at 2016 are:

  • Brujah – Jaroslav Pascek, Polish crusader, warrior, general and devout Christian
  • Gangrel – [vacant]
  • Malkavian – Carolina Bedelia, English-American governess of old style and old manners
  • Nosferatu – Cock Robin, American spy, agent, silversmith and political mediator
  • Toreador – Audrie Claire Guil, French-Canadian art collector, muse and protector of talent
  • Tremere – Lotharius, Austrian mage, trusted advisor of Vienna
  • Ventrue – Lucinde, Alastor and hunter of the most wanted of unknown origins

The Sabbat is likewise fractured by religious and political differences, where the traditional, mostly European Ultra-Conservatives oppose the young, free, mostly American Loyalists, while the Status Quo tries to maintain peace. The Black Hand acts as political police, elite force, assassins and ideological supervision. The Sabbath Inquisition, a highly secretive and small force maintains the faith of Cain and fights heresy, like infernalism and the followers of Lilith. Albeit their territories are generally weaker and poorer compared to the Camarilla, they command larger number of Kindred, superior unity and religious drive, and has fewer limitations that could hinder them. They successfully drove the Camarilla back in the 1970-1980s in the United States, expanded their religious, drug and weapon networks in Southern Europe, Eastern Europe and Latin-America, took advantage of the African and Asian conflicts and started a campaign of religious-political purification. The clear territorial system of 23 Cardinal Regions, further divided to Archbishopric and Bishopric Dioceses seems rigid, but gives the Sabbath structure, modularity and clear line of command at all time.

The Assamites control smaller but important territories in Persia, Mesopotamia, Arabia, Turkey and the Holy Land run directly by Viziers, Caliphs, Pashas or Sultans (albeit not all of them are Assamites) commanded from Alamut, the mountain fortress of the Clan, or by puppets, Princes or Archbishops who nominally serve the Camarilla or Sabbath but in reality acknowledge Assamite rule. The Schism severely injured Assamite power as the Clan is on the verge of falling to pieces – the deeply religious ones fight against the conservative, loyalist followers of the harsh, militaristic Blood Commandments and Clan values, and also with the more careful, distant philosophers who seek renewal and enlightenment. The three bloodlines, the Warriors, the Wizards and the Viziers often battle each other and the Old Man of the Mountain, the leader of the Clan is forced to take more and more severe means to solve the problems. The Sabbath and Camarilla both take advantage of the situation to push the Assamites back and to solve centuries old disputes – and in the process, all of the Middle-East is burning.

The Giovanni family still runs a huge crime- and ghost-empire from the Mausoleum in Venice. They have several sub-families from Scotland to New England, from Central-America to Greece, from the Caribbean to Nevada, from Central Africa to Germany, from Hong Kong to Monaco. They take no sides in the Camarilla-Sabbath war, sometimes they even support both sides alike – after all, death makes no exceptions and selling weapons, secrets and reaping souls is a profitable business. They have little global power but literally millions of souls, boons and old secrets to use as weapons if needed to. Yet, they face internal problems as it is rumoured that certain sub-families demand greater rights and share of the leadership and that the Mausoleum’s deepest chambers fell silent. And without the Anziante, the Elders of the Family, the strict, blood-relation driven system quickly crumbles as the younger ones compete for power.

While the Followers of Set only control a war-torn, poor and generally backwater region in Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Ethiopia and Jordan, they actually has hundreds of temples, cells and cults all around the world. They are the most prominent outside of North-Africa in the Caribbean, Florida, Central-America, Columbia and Venezuela, they have also footholds in Louisiana, the Mediterranean, England, California, New York, India and even France and Germany. Their operations are managed from secret temples and underground burial chambers by the Hierophants, to whom each and every Settite owns oath of fealty.

The Kindred of India – not only Ravnos, but also ancient Ventrue bloodlines, Brujah, Gangrel, Nosferatu, Lasombra and Toreador Vampires – care little for the Camarilla-Sabbath war as the main battlefields are far from India and they have a much closer and more dire enemy, the Kathay. They do compete with the Sabbath for Pakistan and Indochina, and they do try to root out the last remains of the British (Camarilla Ventrue) colonisation, but their main focus is China. The Week of Nightmares which struck the Ravnos seriously damaged their cause but eventually some of the Ravnos emerged and the Clan started to rebuild, sometimes with the help of other Kindreds in India – only the stronger, more wicked and more cruel ones survived, and the Week of Nightmares unified the previously warring bloodlines and ideologies.
